What is a recomp?
A console game's code translated into a native PC program. The game runs without an emulator, in high resolution, widescreen, at your screen's refresh rate, often with mods.
Does Cartouche provide the games?
The free, open-source indie games, yes: Cartouche installs them from their creators' official repository. The recomps and ports, no, never: you bring your own ROM or the files from your copy of the game, and Cartouche puts them where the game expects them.
Which indie PC games?
Free, open-source games their creators publish themselves, picked and checked one by one. The catalog keeps growing.
Where do the builds come from?
From each project's official releases on GitHub, and nowhere else. Every file is checked before it installs.
What about my saves?
They stay with you. The timeline captures them before and after each game, and you can export a snapshot to take it to another PC.
Linux, Steam Deck?
Windows 10 and 11 first. Linux and the Steam Deck are planned, and the architecture is built for them.
